How to Automate Master Track in Ableton Live Session View

If you want to automate the master track in Ableton Live Session View, you have probably already noticed that Ableton does not support this natively. Fortunately, the Max for Live device pack Automate Volume+Pan+Sends for Master+Return+Group Tracks – Pack solves exactly this problem. In this article, you will learn how to use it to automate the master track volume, pan, and CUE level directly from your Session View clips.

What the Max for Live Pack Does

The Automate Volume+Pan+Sends for Master+Return+Group Tracks – Pack includes five Max for Live devices in total. One of these devices — the Automate Master Track device — sits on a dedicated MIDI track in your set. From there, it gives you full control over the master track’s volume fader, pan setting, CUE level, and crossfader position. Because the device lives on a MIDI track, you can drive all of its parameters through dummy clips, which is the key to making automation work in Session View.

To get started, place the device on a MIDI track and double-click an empty clip slot to create a dummy clip. Open the clip’s envelope section, select the Automate Master Track device from the device list, and choose the parameter you want to control. From that point on, the clip handles the automation for you.

How to Automate Master Track Volume in Ableton Live

To automate the master track volume, first touch the volume fader on the Automate Master Track device. Ableton automatically selects the last parameter you touched, so when you open your dummy clip’s envelope section, the volume parameter appears pre-selected — which saves you time.

Next, draw your automation envelope directly in the clip. For example, set a breakpoint at +3 dB at the start and let the envelope ramp down to −6 dB over the length of the clip. As soon as you play the clip, the master fader moves in real time, following the envelope you drew. You can loop the clip for gradual, repeated changes or leave looping off for a one-time transition between volume levels.

This approach works especially well for live performance scenarios where you want the overall mix level to shift automatically at a specific point in your set without touching anything manually.

How to Automate Master Track PAN in Ableton Live

Automating the master track pan works in exactly the same way. Touch the pan dial on the Automate Master Track device to make it the active parameter, then head to your dummy clip’s envelope section. You will find the pan parameter already waiting for you.

Draw your automation curve to move the pan position over time. The device also supports stereo split mode — when you switch to stereo split on the device, the pan control shifts accordingly, and you can automate that position as well. A double-click on the pan dial resets it to center, which is a handy shortcut when you need to dial in your starting point before drawing the envelope.

How to Automate Master Track CUE Level in Ableton Live

Automating the master track CUE level is a particularly useful trick for live performance. Imagine your set is building toward the final songs and the band is getting louder on stage — you need the click in your headphones to come up to match. Instead of reaching for the CUE knob manually, you can set up the automation in advance and let the clip handle it for you.

To do this, touch the CUE volume dial on the Automate Master Track device. Then open the dummy clip on the scene where your final songs begin, go to the envelope section, and select the CUE volume parameter. Draw a ramp from your starting value — for example, −10 dB — up to your target level, such as +5 dB. Turn off clip looping so the change happens once and stays there.

When you trigger that scene, the CUE level rises automatically, and you never have to break your focus during the performance.
